Cambodia is rich with history, culture and natural beauty, but many Cambodians live in poverty and children’s education is often neglected. Battambang province, where Battambang is the capital city, is in North-western Cambodia and has yet to experience the bustling western tourism of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
This project gives volunteers the opportunity to teach English and other subjects in local schools and community organisations where they can have a real impact on the lives of underprivileged children.
Your volunteer role: Volunteers are expected to teach English and can incorporate other subjects according to their own skills and areas of interest, including sport, computers, music, art and drama. The children you will be teaching are aged between 4 and 16 and class sizes vary depending upon the school or organisation. Providing personal language tuition or teacher training for local staff would also be an excellent way to ensure the continued impact of your volunteering.
You can expect to find minimal resources, insufficient numbers of local teachers and wide discrepancies in levels of English. There is therefore a great need for support and input from volunteers who bring English, inspiration and fun to the schools. Volunteers can help to compensate for deficiencies in basic resources and can make a real difference to the quality of the children’s education.
The projects are well organised so that volunteers can make a real contribution in a relatively short amount of time. Pre-departure briefings and the offer of continuous support from the local coordinator helps with preparation and enables volunteers to maximise their contribution as well as enjoying their own experience.

This volunteer teaching role requires no qualifications or previous experience, just enthusiasm and a willingness to engage children in the opportunities of education. You will gain invaluable teaching experience and learn about Cambodian culture by becoming immersed in the local community.
