Peru is a developing country that faces many social and economic issues and children often do not receive the care and support they need. This project involves teaching at a kindergarten school and leading fun activities at an after school club. In the Sacred Valley, volunteers help to give attention and education to children who need extra support and encouragement.
This project aims to provide the children with a safe, engaging and happy environment where they are able to continue their learning. It is also a place where children are encouraged to express themselves through taking part in extracurricular activities.
Gap year volunteer role: Working with children always means that you need bundles of energy! You will be teaching in the school in the morning and then leading activities in the afternoons. During the mornings, GapGuru volunteers will interact with the children to improve their English language and social skills. You could use nursery rhymes, games or other activities to engage the children and keep them occupied and interested in learning. However, this project is about you bringing your own skills, enthusiasm and personality to inspire the children and improve their quality of learning and life.
The school day finishes after lunch and volunteers will then work at an after school club project. At the after school club, volunteers will need to be creative and proactive in organising and leading activities. These could range from helping with homework to music shows and sports activities…almost anything that you think children would enjoy!
Your gap year experience: This is a fantastic opportunity to work with some amazing children and have lots of fun. The children are very welcoming and you will enjoy interacting with them and helping them learn. The children come from very poor backgrounds and have very limited options in life so this is a great way to use your gap year to have an impact on the future of these children in Peru.
The Sacred Valley is the ideal destination for gappers looking to get the most from their experience whilst in South America. The stunning historic heartland of the Inca Empire, it is located perfectly to experience vibrant city Cusco, World Heritage Site Machu Picchu, and beautiful Lake Titicaca, as well as some of Peru's lesser known hidden treasures such as Arequipa, the Colca Canyon and the sand dunes at Huacachina.
