Volunteer in a nursery and primary school in Arusha, the safari capital of Africa
Tanzania is a developing country that faces many social and economic issues, and children often don't receive the care and support they need. This project involves classroom support to help improve the English-speaking ability of children aged 3-11, broadening their future opportunities for further education and employment. There is also the opportunity to run activities with the children, such as reading groups and after-school sports clubs.
Your gap year role: Working with little children always means that you need bundles of energy! You will be assisting the classroom teacher with the children's English lessons, and - if you wish - could also be involved with teaching other curriculum subjects too. GapGuru volunteers will interact with the children to improve their English language and social skills. You could use nursery rhymes, games or other activities to engage the children and keep them occupied and interested in learning. Volunteers also have the chance to be creative and proactive by organising and leading activities for the children. These could range from drama productions to sports games … to almost anything that you think small children would enjoy!
Your gap year experience: This is a fantastic opportunity to work with some amazing children and have lots of fun. The children are very welcoming and you will enjoy interacting with them and helping them learn. The children come from very poor backgrounds and have very limited options in life so this is a great way to use your gap year to have an impact on the future of these children in Tanzania.
This volunteer role requires no qualifications; although previous experience would be an advantage, a proactive ‘can-do’ attitude and an imaginative approach is just as important. You will gain teaching experience and learn about East African culture by becoming immersed in the local community.
