Hallo,
I'm Christina. I'm 18, soon to be 19 whilst I'm out here and my greatest loves in life are music and beer.
I wanted to take a gap year to give me time to resit the exams I knew I would fail and to have an incredible adventure. I'm a small town girl and have lived in the same place all my life, so India seemed about the most colorful, beautiful and alien place for me to go.
I am working for three months in Chennai
for an organisation that uses music, dance and drama to aid the
development of both adults and children with various learning and
physical disabilities. The schools I work in have about 40 students in
each (the main school is with children from about 3 and up and the
second school is for teenagers and adults up to the age of about 55) but
their outreach programmes benefit around 200 other special needs people
in Chennai.
My Projects
In terms of the Indian experience as a whole if I thought that my first
few days here were eventful I was unprepared for the following few
weeks! The amount of times I have been lost here I have stopped
counting, but it's all part of the adventure so I have loved every
minute of it! The main problem lies in the auto-rickshaw drivers; you
tell them "I want to go to xyz" and they wobble their heads like
dashboard buddies and so I have been assuming this means yes.
